When it comes to manga or anime, there are few who don't know the hit series "One Piece" and its creator Eiichiro Oda. The series became a worldwide phenomenon to the point that it became a pop culture spawning a long-running anime series and multiple films. Fans have each of their own favorite characters in the series but many are wondering, which among his characters did he like the most?
According to Comic Book, Oda revealed his favorite character during a joint interview with the great Akira Toriyama, the man behind the "Dragon Ball" series. Oda mentioned that though he liked Luffy, he liked Gaimon the most. For those who don't know Gaimon, he was a former pirate that was stuck in an empty treasure chest that Luffy met on the Island of Rare Animals.
He was searching for treasure on a cliff as a part of an unnamed pirate crew when he fell and landed on a treasure chest. Through the years his body took the shape of the chest and became inseparable to him. Oda added that it's very hard to think of other better than him and that it was an amazing setup on his regard.
Oda also said that he initially planned that Gaimon would be originally stuck in a barrel instead of a chest. He elaborated that when he is creating new characters he just goes with the flow and draw some rough sketches that come with a line or two as to what the character would say. Basing on the words that he wrote, he will expound the character's personality in the long run.
In the interview, Toriyama was asked the same question on who's his favorite character. He mentioned that his favorite would be Piccolo. He explained that Piccolo is the first of his characters where he sees as both scary and cool at the same time as reported by The Grandline. It really is a cliché when bad guys turn into good guys, but it just feels great drawing it," Toriyama added.
It is really surprising to see that the authors of these hit manga and anime series didn't prefer the protagonists of their creation. Either way, that is their own personal tastes and we all have our self-interpretation. Meanwhile, in four months' time, "One Piece" will be celebrating its 20th birthday and a celebration is surely on the way.
