‘Dear White People’ Trailer Has Outraged White People, But Justin Simien Feels More Encouraged

The trailer for Netflix's new TV series "Dear White People," has angered a lot of white people, saying that the series is racist and it's aimed at them. But the negative comments encouraged creator Justin Simien to create similar stories.

According to a report from Emily Trainham of The Hollywood Gossip, several white people took offense on the series trailer. Some are even angry with the title "Dear White People."

Trainham said that one person tweeted that "Netflix had the gaul to launch a show called Dear White People." Another said that people who waste time watching this show are "dumber" the people who produced it.

She adds that people are so angry with the trailer that some are even threatening to cancel their subscription to Netflix. But she said that the thing about this new TV series is that it's not even a racist show.

The show is actually about combating racism, which Trainham said is a subject that needs to be taught. According to a report from Polygon, Netflix said "Dear White People" will follow the lives of a group of students of colour who are navigating "a diverse landscape of social injustice, cultural bias, political correctness (or lack thereof) and sometimes misguided activism in the millennial age."

The report adds that Simien, the director of the 2014 movie "Dear White People," has been active in replying to the negative comments about the series. He said that at first, the hateful and racist messages hurt him, but now he feels even more encouraged to create more stories, this time about women of color.

"I want those who are chronically unseen in the culture to feel seen," Simien wrote. "And I want those willing to extend empathy to experiences unlike theirs to understand their humanity more deeply."

Simien adds that people are just not used to seeing "woman of color refer to white people en masse," which is why most white men and women are threatened by "Dear White People." The TV series is scheduled to premiere on April 28 and all 10 episodes are available to stream on Netflix. Check out the trailer of the series below.
