John Boyega, who played Finn in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," will return to the big screen, this time as Jake Pentecost in "Pacific Rim: Uprising" and he just shared an image of the character. The image also hints at the kind of tone that the movie will be having.
According to a report from Anime News Network, this is the first official image of Jake, the son of Idris Elba's Stacker Pentecost (a character in the first "Pacific Rim"), that came out. Boyega shared the image via Twitter on Monday.
The report said that Boyega's character will be the lead role in the film and he will be joined by actress and singer Cailee Spaeny, who will play the lead female in the sequel. The second installment of the movie is set to debut on February 23, 2018.
The image gives a hint as to what kind of tone the sequel will be having, according to Kevin Yeoman of Screen Rant. Boyega didn't provide many details about the film, opting to keep his tweet short with "I am Pentecost 2018" together with the hashtag #PacificRimUprising," but the latest image shows the "moody" look of the film.
Yeoman said that the room in the image somehow hints that the Jaeger program fell even further on "harder times than the first film." He also said that the image helps set the tone that director Steven S. DeKnight has in store for the new movie.
Guillermo Del Toro provided an adventurous and fun tone in the first "Pacific Rim" movie, according to Yeoman. And the latest image doesn't seem to show that kind of tone.
Nevertheless, he said it would keep the fans guessing. Joining Boyega and Spaeny in the film are "Suicide Squad" actor Scott Eastwood, Jing Tian of "The Great Wall," Japanese actor Mackenyu, and Adria Arjona, who had a role in "The Belko Experiment."
