Xbox fans have a pretty good reason to be happy this holiday season as the console will be celebrating their milestone of having 300 backward-compatible titles for the Xbox One by offering a free game to all Xbox Live subscribers. The free game is Lost Odyssey and will be available for free until December 31, 2016.
The announcement was made by Larry Hryb, more popularly known by his Twitter handle Major Nelson, through a tweet posted on his account. In addition to Lost Odyssey, gamers can also purchase the Japanese RPG Blue Dragon online. The two aforementioned titles were previously backward-compatible by only putting the original Xbox 360 disc into the Xbox One's disc tray.
The head of Microsoft's Xbox division, Phil Spencer, tweeted that nearly 50 percent of all Xbox One owners use the console to play backward-compatible Xbox 360 games. The feature was first introduced back in November 0f 2015, and nearly all of the Xbox 360 games that were offered as part of Microsoft's Games with Gold program have since become backward-compatible titles. The Express reports that the offer will also be available for players in the U.K.
Backward-compatibility is one of the key features that sets the Xbox One apart from the PlayStation 4, which is its chief rival in the console market. The number of backward-compatible Xbox 360 titles available for the Xbox One continues to grow on a constant basis. Microsoft regularly announces the games that are backward-compatible with the Xbox One as soon as they become available.
However, trying to keep track of which Xbox 360 discs can be played on the Xbox One can be difficult. Polygon has compiled a list of all the backward-compatible titles available on their website. Lost Odyssey was originally released for the Xbox 360 back in late 2007 in Japan and followed a global release in February of 2008. It became a backward-compatible title on September 29, while Blue Dragon was added to the list on November 1.
