Renting a car might be a necessity for some trips and car rentals can cost more in some cities than others. According to a new survey from CheapCarRental.net, the most expensive city to rent a car in is New York City.
To come up with the rankings of the most and least expensive car rentals in the US, CheapCarRental.net compared 50 main destinations based on their rentals over the past 12 months.
In New York City, travelers had to pay an average of $76 per day for the cheapest available rental car. This is significantly more than what drivers had to pay for the second most expensive city of Detroit. The average daily rate for Detroit was $69, putting in second on the list. For the survey, each city's main airport was chosen as the Pick Up and Drop Off location for car rentals.
At the end of the list, the least expensive U.S. car rental city was Orlando, with the average rate only being $25 per day for the most affordable car. Other cheap car rental destinations include Los Angeles, San Diego and Las Vegas, where the average daily rate fell below $30, according to the survey.
The established prices that go along with the list are average rates and the costs can fluctuate heavily for some destinations. For example, in Miami on some days during the off season, travelers could find a rental car for less than $20 per day. Meanwhile, during the high season they may have had to pay $60 or more. In New York City, the price range was a bit less volatile, settling in around $60 to $110 per day.
