Venture Outside Marrakesh and Visit These Cities in Morocco

Morocco is easily one of the most visited African countries, and many (if not all) travelers who head to the country always make it a point to visit Marrakesh. It's not difficult to understand why, especially since the city has awe-inspiring tourist attractions such as the Jardin Marjorelle, Bahia Palace, and Medresa Ben Youssef.

However, for those who want to venture out and explore more of the country, Morocco's other cities have much to offer travelers who head their way. Here are some of the country's other cities that are definitely worth the trip.

Casablanca

The capital of the country it may not be, but Casablanca is actually Morocco's largest city. It is likewise considered the country's economic centre. One of the reasons behind this is that Casablanca serves as Morocco's biggest port.

The area where Casablanca now stands was founded all the way back in the 7th century BC. Given its rich history, the city is well-known for its architectural and historical heritage.

Fez

If Casablanca is Morocco's largest city, Fez gets the distinction for being the second largest. Considered the cultural capital of Morocco, Fez is sometimes referred to as the "Athens of Africa."

Those who want to visit a UNESCO World Heritage Site should head straight for Fez. This well-preserved historic town has been on the UNESCO list since 1981.

Meknes

What was once Morocco's capital for 55 years, Meknes was founded in 11th century BC. It was founded as a military settlement, and this heritage of the city is still evident to this day.

Sultan Ismail Ibn Sharif, who made Meknes the capital, likewise ordered the building of fortifications and monumental gates in the city, and many of these can still be visited by travelers today.

Rabat

Many think that Marrakesh is the capital of Morocco. Many also are surprised when they find out that Marrakesh is not the capital of Morocco. Believe it or not, the capital is actually Rabat.

Located on the Atlantic Ocean, Rabat was founded in the 12th century. Counted as one of the four Imperial Cities of Morocco, Rabat is also another city in Morocco that is home to a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
