Chicken Causes a Power Outage at a Maui Airport

An airport in Maui, Hawaii had a power outage recently and the reason is anything but the norm. The power outage at Kahului Airport was caused by a chicken.

You read that correctly. A chicken caused the blackout.

The chicken managed to get into a Maui Electric Co. transformer in the rental car section of Kahului Airport on Tuesday afternoon. The bird caused the power outage that started at 2:07 p.m. Due to the outage, passengers had to disembark their planes by mobile stairway. A Maui Electric company spokeswoman confirmed that the chicken got into the transformer, the Star Advertiser reports.

According to The Maui News, the airport tower and air traffic was not affected by the blackout. The outage did affect some parts of the airport and nearby businesses, including the rental car company, a hotel and a department store.

Security screenings at the airport had to be done manually and the Transportation Security Administration had to open and close electronic doors, according to Maui District airport manager Marvin Moniz. Moniz said there were some flight delays but the delays were no more than 15 minutes.

The blackout didn't last very long. The power was restored about half an hour later. The only exception was the rental car company. Their power was restored about an hour and 15 minutes after the outage started.

This isn't the first time an animal caused an issue as an airport. At Denver International Airport, bunnies have been wreaking havoc as they destroy cars in the parking lot. Rabbits nearby the airport have been chewing on the wiring of the cars, resulting in hundreds and thousands of dollars' worth of damage for airport employees and travelers.

This isn't the first time chicken caused a disruption in travel either. In October, a Pennsylvania highway was closed for several hours as a truck dumped 37,000 pounds of chicken meat on the road.
