Steve Stephens is a 37-year-old man from Cleveland, Ohio who got very popular on social media, but for all the wrong reasons. He is a suspect in shooting and killing an elderly man which is seen in a Facebook video that he shared.
According to Mirror, Stephens broadcast the random killing of Robert Godwin Sr, 74, on Sunday. Godwin was walking along a road, when Stephens said, "Finally found somebody I'm going to kill. I'm going to go kill this old dude." A second video circulated on social media showed him talking to someone, and claimed that he had "snapped" and that he killed 13 people, and that he will keep killing "until they catch" him. His claims about other homicides are yet to be verified.
Stephens blamed the shooting to a woman, who he said he was "living over there with her." "I woke up Friday and I just couldn't take it anymore, I just left," he added. Express said that the woman is believed to be his former partner Joy Lane. Lane said that she has been in a relationship with Stephens for several years, adding that she is "sorry this has happened."
Stephens and Lane both worked at Beech Brook, a mental health and foster care organization in Cleveland. Lane left the agency in 2016 before joining the U.S. Air Force Reserves. She said that Stephens is a "nice guy." "He's generous with everyone he knows. He was kind and loving to me and my children," Lane said. Cleveland Police have now issued an aggravated murder warrant for Stephens, and they have launched a manhunt.
Maggie Green, Stephens' mother, said that the alleged "Facebook killer" visited her the day before the incident, and said, "If you see me again, it'll be a miracle." His co-workers at Beech Brook have been "shocked and horrified." The agency's spokesperson said that they "hope and pray that he is arrested as soon as possible."
