Jimmy Kimmel, host of "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" and Conan O'Brien, host of "Late Night With Conan O'Brien" criticized United Airlines. Both hosts did their criticisms and reactions to the airline company's mishandling of their passengers.
The airline staff dragged a customer off an overbooked flight according to Vanity Fair. Weeks before, they refused two young girls to board a flight because they were wearing leggings. Due to the flak the company received, CEO Oscar Munoz apologized for "having to re-accommodate the customers."
Jimmy Kimmel's reaction to the apology was far from satisfactory. He tweeted, "This is like when we re-accommodated El Chapo out of Mexico." Kimmel added, "That is such sanitized, say-nothing, take-no-responsibility corporate B.S. speak. I don't know how the guy who sent that tweet didn't vomit when he typed it out."
The Oscars 2017 host made a counterfeit commercial for the company where a flight attendant would utter all the words that slam United Airlines. The ad says, "We're United Airlines. You do what we say when we say, and there won't be a problem. Capisce? If we say you fly, you fly. If not, tough shit. Give us a problem, and we'll drag your ass off the plane. And if you resist, we'll beat you so badly, you'll be using your own face as a flotation device. United Airlines: Fuck you."
For his own version, O'Brien did the opposite. He staged a situation where in a prominent seat in the audience was empty and needed to be filled. His promo says, "We went out to the sidewalk, outside Warner Brothers." He explained,"We asked nicely for volunteers; no one said yes. We asked so many people. We even offered people $800 to sit in that seat. Still, no go." So they drag a bewildered man up to the seat forcing him to watch the taping.
The host was not satisfied with a single episode attack on United Airlines. According to New York Times, Kimmel said on his show that the bad publicity hit the company causing it to lose $255 million in market value in one day. The airlines could have given all the mishandled passengers jet planes each or a 737 and they will still not incur a loss.
He also said that since the current US president Donald Trump is spending $20 million of people's money on his weekend trips to Florida, it is better if he is the one discharged from the plane. Jimmy Kimmel and Conan O'Brien are fortunate that they can use their shows to deliver their messages whether they be negative or positive.
