The main villain for "Arrow" Season 5 has been Prometheus, tormenting and manipulating Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) from the shadows, while keeping the true identity of the villain secret, something that the producers somehow wanted. Prometheus was actually patterned from manipulators such as Hannibal Lecter of "Silence of the Lambs."
In an interview with ScreenerTV, executive producer Wendy Mericle revealed that the character of the Prometheus they're portraying in the show is so important. The villain in "Arrow" Season 5 is also different from the one portrayed in the comics, as the character's nature has been inspired by other villains in American movies.
"Part of the fun of that is that you can draw on other sources of inspiration," Mericle said. The inspiration that Mericle mentioned came from the movies such as "The Usual Suspects," "American Psycho," and "Seven."
Mericle said that they were looking at the "big manipulators" in these films. Prometheus' character took inspiration from Lecter, Kevin Spacey's Roger "Verbal" Kint / Keyser Soze and more.
The reason for this inspiration is that Mericle wanted a villain that offered something different in season 5. They want to change up what they were offering before so, they came up with a manipulator villain in Prometheus.
Alex Welch of Screen Rant said that the inspirations of Prometheus' character are actually very evident in the show. Like the midseason finale where the villain manipulated the Green Arrow into accidentally killing the boyfriend of Emily Bett Rickards' character Felicity.
Welch adds that the producers said the villain was actually the result of the hero's murderous acts in season 1 of the show. And as a way to torment the Green Arrow, Prometheus is even wearing a twisted version of the hero's costume.
And with still more episodes to go, it doesn't look like Prometheus will slow down in trying to torment Queen and his team. "Arrow" Season 5 continues on Wednesday, 8 p.m. at The CW. Check out the trailer for the next episode in the video below.
