‘Scarface’ Reboot Of Coen Brothers Will Have ‘Rouge One’ Star Diego Luna As Lead, Mackenzie And Berg Frontrunners For Director

The classic movie that starred Al Pacino, "Scarface," will be getting a reboot and it will cast "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" star Diego Luna and have a script polished by the Coen brothers. As for the director, filmmaker David Mackenzie and Peter Berg are the frontrunners.

According to a report from Variety, Universal Pictures have asked Joel and Ethan Coen to polish the script of the reimagined "Scarface." This will not be the first time that the brothers will be editing and fine tuning an already written major script.

The report said that the Oscar-winning tandem was recently tasked to polish the script of "Bridges of Spies," a movie directed by award-winning director Steven Spielberg. The brothers were also hired to edit the Angelina Jolie's "Unbroken."

Aside from the Coen brothers, the report adds that also on board is actor Luna, who starred in the blockbuster Star Wars movie "Rouge One." Luna will be the lead actor, meaning he will reprise Pacino's character.

The only thing missing for this movie is a director, as Antoine Fuqua left the project to focus on Sony's sequel to "The Equalizer." But Borys Kit of The Hollywood Reporter said that Universal Pictures is already close to hiring his replacement.

Kit said that Mackenzie and Berg, who was the director and producer, respectively, of "Hell or High Water," will be meeting with executives of Universal. It adds that this sets up an interesting competition.

According to Kit, Berg was Mackenzie's boss in "Hell or High Water," and the director-producer also has a relationship already with Universal, having directed movies such as "Lone Survivor" and "Battleship." Mackenzie, on the other hand, was previously passed over for the "Scarface" gig as the studio went with Fuqua.

But he is now back on Hollywood's radar, thanks to the success of the 2016 crime/drama film. It earned actor Jeff Bridges an Oscar nomination.

The "Scarface" reboot is set to premiere on August 10, 2018. Check out the high definition trailer for the 1983 classic "Scarface" that was starring Al Pacino in the video below.
