'Detroiters' Pilot Episode Review: Brand New Show Receives Praise From Critics

Sam Richardson (Sam) and Tim Robison (Tim) star in their very own comedy series and play as brothers-in-law, best friends, business associates, and big league numskulls who make the worst of decisions, then recover from them only to make even worse. "Detroiters" is about the audacity of halfwits with dreams.

In the show's pilot episode, Sam out of nowhere decides to slam his elbow on a glass-paned door frame in the middle of an office deliberating session which outrageously turns into a Nerf basketball game. The glass does not break, however, and so the friends decide to throw various objects at it. This goes on for quite a while until they decide to haul the desk at the glass-paned door frame which resulted in the collapse of the desk.

According to Jen Chaney of Vulture, the scene is a metaphor of Sam and Tim's attitude in the new comedy show. No matter how disheartening a situation is, the friends always seem to pick themselves up and move forward, even when disaster is inevitable.

The story of "Detroiters" revolves around Sam and Tim running Cramblin Advertising, an agency which was subsequently supervised by Tim's father before having a mental breakdown resulting to the handing over of the business. Sam and Tim devotes much of their time overseeing the business, but when they are not, they are either trying to establish a new business, or trying to live the best life they can without paying attention to what may help them achieve this goal.

Chaney writes that scenes which take place within the environment of Cramblin Advertising are often the funniest. She adds that in later episodes, some sequences are funnier in theory than execution, but that this does not make "Detroiters" fall under the cringe-worthy comedy category.
