A&E's "Bates Motel" will return for its final season to explore a bizarre bond between a mother and her son as seen in Norman Bates (Freedie Highmore) and Norma Bates (Vera Farmiga). The events in Season 5 occur two years after the last season which ended with Norma's death. That means that we will be seeing the first appearance of Marion Crane, who will be played by Rihanna, in the show. Marion Crane was famously portrayed by Janet Leigh who met her demise at the hands of Norman Bates in the iconic shower scene from the 1960 Alfred Hitchcock film, Psycho.
The trailer for Season 5 suggests that the show will recreate the infamous shower scene in the film as it recaptures the dark moment when Norman watches Marion through a tiny hole in the wall. Entertainment Weekly reports that we will be seeing a Marion Crane different from the original, according to Executive Producer Kerry Ehrin.
Erin also says that they are taking threads of the original and using the to make it recognizable, but it's where they go with it that makes it different. In Hitchcock's film, Marion is on the run after stealing money from his boss and decides to stay a night at the Bates Motel, where she is murdered by Norman in Psycho's legendary shower sequence.
"Bates Motel" is not the only time we will see Rihanna acting this year. The pop star is currently shooting "Ocean's 8" and has a role in an upcoming film by Luc Besson, "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets."
The official synopsis for "Bates Motel" Season 5 via Slash Film describes Alex Romero (Nelson Carbonell) as vengeful, seeking to destroy Norman for the murder of his one true love, Norma Bates. Romero is currently behind bars for a perjury.
