It looks like fans of the hit HBO original series "Game of Thrones" will likely get a prequel instead of a spinoff. And HBO has more than one option when they do decide to go this route.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Casey Bloys, HBO's programming president, told them that they are more likely to do a prequel than a spin-off, as it "has less pressure." He said that the George R.R. Martin's history of Westeros is something they could do.
Bloys said the story is something that gives you areas in which to say to a writer, 'If you were going to do this, then go flesh it out,' and we'll see what comes back. But I don't feel any pressure that we have to have something."
But Martin's history of Westeros is not the only option that HBO has, as James Roberts of Screen Rant said there are other options available. One of those options is to explore more the war between Robert and the Targaryens.
Roberts said that using that story would give fans more insight about young Robert and his days before he ascended to the Iron Throne. He adds that the storyline will also let fans know more about Ned.
He did say that it would be a trickier option to consider, given the expectations that fans already have for these two characters. He adds that moving away from the story that people already know is the better option.
One thing's for certain, though, HBO is not yet ready to close its doors to the hit-series "Game of Thrones," as they're continuing to explore possible spinoffs or prequel to the series. And it will be up to the fans if they will push through with their plans or not. Check out the trailer for season 7 of the hit series in the video below.
