"Empire" fans will be happy to know that the enigmatic Lyons will be back for another season as announced by Gary Newman, Chairman and CEO of Fox Television Group. And another thing to celebrate is that a spin-off will most likely happen, as stated by Lee Daniels, co-creator of the hit series.
The season 4 renewal is no longer a surprise, given that since it started showing on January 2015, "Empire" has become one of the biggest television hits. Variety reports that the show is unbeaten among adults aged 18-49 since its first episode, despite getting stiff competition this year from "This Is Us."
In its three seasons, "Empire" became a favorite for award nominations, and has even won Taraji P. Henson, who plays Cookie Lyons, an Emmy trophy. Speaking of the Lyon matriarch Cookie, there may be a big chance that a prequel spinoff based on her life will be happening.
The Hollywood Reporter, citing co-creator Lee Daniels, states that an official spinoff will happen. "We really are in deep talks about it, and we're having all these ideas thrown around to figure it out. But I can officially say that we will be having a spinoff," Daniels says.
There is no official word that the spin-off will have Cookie as the main character though the site unearthed speculations last August 2015 that this might be the case. Whatever it is, having another show based on "Empire" can only mean good things for television.
The show has been on hiatus since its midseason finale last December. The episode, entitled "A Furnace for a Foe," say the Lyons dealing with much family drama, namely Jamal's PTSD and addiction to pills, the reveal of Cookie's new lover Angelo's past, and Andre's plans to betray his father.
"Empire" will be back on March 22, 2017, with the episode "Keys to the Kingdom."
