When one plans for a vacation in Europe, most people would instantly recommend going to the famous Eiffel Tower in Paris, or the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy. But one of the hidden gems of Europe is now making a name in the tourism industry: Portugal.
Portugal is predicted to be one of the most visited countries in 2017. With its golden shores and breathtaking landscapes, it's no question that this quaint country is making its name in the tourism industry. Predictions have bases, however, when the Portuguese Tourism Board revealed that tourists are starting to flock in 2016.
According to Dublin People, figures showed that the number of visitors has increased by 9.2 percent, comparing with last year's 8.5 percent increase. Tourists aren't only staying in Portugal for day tours or layovers, because there has also been an increase in the number of hotel bed nights by 8.7 percent.
What can Portugal offer to tourists that one cannot see in neighboring countries? Olivia Miwil of the New Strait Times Online has experienced firsthand what this country has during an eight-day tour. Highlights of the tour include a city tour in Lisbon, Portugal's capital city. One can see breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean from the hilly part of the city. In the city also stood tall the Belem tower, one of the sites that survived the massive earthquake more than two centuries ago.
One popular go-to place in Portugal is the Algarve, a coastline region of turquoise water and hidden beaches. It is also popular with golfers as they have some of the best golf courses in Europe.
Another quaint town is Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In this part of Portugal, one can experience scenic structures and vibrant hues in different architectural styles.
Wine lovers can also enjoy in Portugal because of the fresh catch and locally made wines in the region. Minho is Portugal's less-famous wine region. Cheap yet good local wine is made in this beautiful part of the country.
A never ending beach getaway can be experienced in Portugal. Free diving, rappelling, whale watching and scenic hikes, all these are for the adventurous thrill-seekers in the Azores, an island 800 miles off-coast.
These are just some obvious reasons why Portugal will be 2017's most visited country. It is in experiencing this beautiful country when one can truly say that Portugal is Europe's hidden gem.
