'Super Mario Run' News: Game Gets Millions Of Downloads And Revenue; Success Still In Doubt For Nintendo

Super Mario Run has counted millions of downloads and earned millions of dollars in revenue however, no one yet has any specific figures of exactly how many and how much. Despite the enormous figures recorded by Super Mario Run, investors are not yet convinced of its success.

Super Mario Run is the first foray into mobile games by Nintendo. It is the first iOS game released by the Japanese video game company. The game was launched globally on the Apple App Store on December 15, 2016. Within an hour of its release, the game quickly became the top downloaded app in the U.S. The game will also be released on the Android Play Store in early 2017.

According to CNBC, a senior analyst at Jefferies, Atul Goyal, said that by March 2017, he expected 500 million downloads of Super Mario Run on the Apple App Store. He also said that he expected a total of 1 billion downloads across all operating systems. Super Mario Run is being declared a runaway success only a day after its launch. Nobody though knows exactly how successful it actually is.

There is no consensus on the numbers. Everyone is claiming something different. The only thing everyone agrees on regarding Super Mario Run is that it was the most downloaded app on the iOS store in the U.S and in 79 other countries as well. It is the top-grossing app in 32 countries.

When looking for more details on downloads or revenue, the only pieces of information available are widly differing estimates. News organizations are relying on different app-reporting firms to provide them with numbers on Super Mario Run.

Gaming website Destructoid mentioned that Apptopia is reporting 2.85 million downloads in the U.S. App Annie is reporting 3.5 million U.S. Downloads, 10 million worldwide, and $4 million in revenue. Sensor Tower has given a number of 5 million for U.S. downloads and $5 million in revenue.

Super Mario Run seems to be on its way to becoming an unqualified success. The world however will not know exactly how successful it is until Nintendo announces it officially. There have been doubts regarding the continued success of Super Mario Run. Investors have remained cautious on Nintendo stocks during the game's launch.

Shares fell after the release of Super Mario Run. This is said to be due to investor perception that the new mobile strategy of Nintendo may not be as successful as they expect. This perception may be a result of the high price of Super Mario Run which is somewhat more costly than other mobile games.

According to Variety magazine, Super Mario Run is free to download but costs $9.99 to access the full game. The price tag together with the fact that the even the full game does not have very long gameplay, has resulted in low ratings from users. Nintendo's Super Mario Run is currently rated three stars from more than 32,000 reviews.
