November 20th, 2016 marked the first time in 12 years that Goldberg had a match in a WWE ring, and his opponent in the main event of the annual Survivor Series pay-per-view was Brock Lesnar, and it took him less than 90 seconds to score a clean pinfall victory over The Beast Incarnate. However, reports have been coming out suggesting that the WWE had other ideas for the match.
The last time that Goldberg and Brock faced each other in the ring was in 2004 at Wrestlemania 20 with Goldberg also emerging victorious in that encounter. The WWE wanted to make things different for Survivor Series by having Lesnar gain a victory against the former WWE and WCW world heavyweight champion, but the idea was scrapped a week before the said event.
According to earlier reports, Goldberg had originally signed a one-match deal for the company and the plan was for him to lose to Lesnar. What is even more interesting is that the WWE had originally planned their match to come off as a real fight wherein they would use actual MMA manoeuvres on one another.
The hype surrounding the rematch between the two behemoths was at an all-time high, with Forbes even reporting that it could "rewrite history" and alter the future of the company, and pro wrestling as a whole. In an interview with ESPN after the Survivor Series pay-per-view, the former WCW and WWE World Heavyweight Champion said that he was not ready to walk away from wrestling just yet. He also added that using "shock and awe" was the best way for him to beat Lesnar at his current age.
Goldberg is currently scheduled to appear in the Royal Rumble pay-per-view which will take place in the Alamo Dome in San Antonio, Texas on January 29, 2017. He will be taking part in the over-the-top 30-man elimination Royal Rumble match. Lesnar has also been booked for the pay-per-view, but it is currently unknown whether or not he will be an entrant in the Royal Rumble match itself.
According to a report from Wrestling Observer's Dave Meltzer, Lesnar might interfere during the Royal Rumble match and cause Goldberg to be eliminated, thereby, continuing their feud. If this were to happen, there is no doubt that the WWE will look to have the two square off at Wrestlemania 33, which is scheduled for April 2nd, 2017.
