Singer Frank Ocean has opened up about his sexuality through Tumblr. His confession suggests that the hip-hop star is bi-sexual or even gay.
Ocean originally planned to reveal his sexuality in the thank you section of the credits on his upcoming album, "Channel Orange." However, after people heard his new album at listening parties, they started to think his lyrics revealed that he was gay as he repeadtedly talks about a man in his music. Ocean took to his public Tumblr account to reveal the truth about his sexuality on Wednesday.
"4 summers ago, I met somebody. I was 19 years old. He was too. We spent that summer, and the summer after, together. Every day almost, and on the day we were together, time would glide. Most of the day I'd see him, and his smile" Ocean writes.
"Sleep I would often share with him. By the time I realised I was in love, it was malignant. It was hopeless. There was no escaping, no negotiating to the women I had been with, the ones I cared for and thought I was in love with," he continued.
With his confession, the 24-year-old hip-hop star from New Orleans suggested that he may be bi-sexual or even gay as he revealed that his first love was another man. For Ocean, opening up about his sexuality is a weight off his shoulders.
"I don't have any secrets I need kept anymore" and "I feel like a free man" he said.
Ocean, whose real name is Christopher Francis Ocean, discussed how the relationship failed and there is no mention of his current love life.
Ocean first got his big break in February 2011 when he dropped his debut mix tape "Nostalgia, Ultra." After being featured on Domo Genesis' "SteamRoller" in 2010, Ocean became a member of the hip-hop collective Odd Future.
Fellow Odd Future member Tyler, The Creator, who has previously been accused of homophobia, took to Twitter to congratulate and show his support for Ocean.
"My big brother finally f*****g did that. Proud of that n***a cause I know that s**t is difficult or whatever," he tweeted.
Hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons responded on Global Grind, saying "Today is a big day for hip-hop. It is a day that will define who we really are. How compassionate will we be? How loving can we be? How inclusive are we? I am profoundly moved by the courage and honesty of Frank Ocean...."
Homosexuality is a sensitive subject in the hip-hop world. Ocean may be the first male member of the hip-hop community to openly admit his relations with a man.
