Rafael Nadal is prepared to play against all odds in the Shanghai Masters, despite being diagnosed with early stage of appendicitis, a major media outlet reported on Tuesday.
According to the Associated Press, the 28-year old Nadal will depend on antibiotics to suppress the inflammation of his appendix and continue his campaign at the Shanghai Masters, where his world's no.2 ranking is currently hanging in the balance.
It has been a rough comeback run so far for the Majorcan Bull after sitting out for over a month due to an injured right wrist. After missing the US Open Championships, Nadal made sure that he won't miss tournaments no more, even if he plays with a serious health problem.
In an interview after his practice session, Nadal confirmed that he will still play at the Shanghai Masters despite his appendicitis. However, the Spaniard is concerned that he might not give his 100 percent because of his current condition.
"I am not going to go for surgery. That's great news for me today. That's why I'm here practicing for 45 minutes, and trying to play tomorrow. But obviously I am not in my best condition," Nadal told the press via the Associated Press.
When asked about his goal in the tournament, Nadal admitted that he's not thinking much of possibly playing for the championship given his situation. Nevertheless, he sure will try to give his best shot in every match.
"My idea is take it out, but you can imagine that I didn't (think) much about that yet. I am here in Shanghai. I just want to try. Then when I go back home, I will talk about the situation with my doctor."
Nadal's Warrior Mentality
Playing with an appendicitis, even in its early stage, isn't a good idea at all. To some, it's a head-scratcher and a complete suicide. However, Nadal is different kind of animal, and that's the reason why he's so special.
Nadal's love for the game and winning can endure almost anything: fatigue, emotional stress, and perhaps, even pain. Apparently, it looks like the Spaniard is willing to risk it all for a chance to play out there. It's his warrior mentality - the one thing that separates from the rest of the field.
