A 'Hobbit' inspired plane that features a behemoth image of the dragon Smaug has been unveiled by New Zealand's national airline Monday in time for the premiere of the second installment of the 'Hobbit' trilogy. The 177-foot image of Smaug is said to be one of the airline's way to market New Zealand as well as to boost tourism in the said country.

Air New Zealand surprised 'Hobbit' fans when it officially unveiled its Smaug-inspired Boeing 777-300 aircraft. The plane features a large image of the dragon on both sides and it was scheduled to fly to Los Angeles in time for the premiere of 'The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug' at the Dolby Theatre Monday.

For 'Hobbit' fans, it was actually the first time for them to have a glimpse of director Peter Jackson's interpretation of Smaug since in the first movie, only Smaug's eyes have been revealed.

The 'Hobbit' trilogy was written by J.R.R. Tolkein, and the movie adaptation was filmed in New Zealand.

The striking image of Smaug is a decal, or giant sticker, according to NBC News, and it was reportedly made by special effects studio Weta Digital, which also took part in the film.

Andrew Aitken, Air New Zealand spokesman said that the airline has decided to keep the decal for an entire year until the third installment arrives. It can be noted that the airline also used a decal during the opening of the first 'Hobbit' movie.

"An airline brand comes to life when it can bring a feel of the destination it's flying to, onboard," CEO of SimpliFlying Shashank Nigam said. "Air New Zealand has often done this through special liveries, like the latest 'Hobbit'-themed one. Even before boarding, passengers get a feel of their destination - in fact, anyone who sees the plane is likely to think about flying on it."

'The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug' is to hit theaters in mid-December.
