National Walking Day: Top 10 Most Walkable Cities in America
Did you know today, April 3 is National Walking Day? As part of an initiative by the American Heart Association, National Walking Day is a large effort to get people on their feet and to bring awareness to the health benefits of walking. To celebrate he day, the American Heart Association ranked the most walkable cities. Some cities are designed to be walk while others are not very accessible without a vehicle or some sort of reliable transportation. Big cities like New York City, Chicago and Boston are made for pedestrians and they offer plenty for walkers to see while they get some exercise. Some smaller cities like Charlotte, Nashville and Memphis are pretty inaccessible without a vehicle. The American Heart Association is encouraging people to get at least 30 minutes of exercise every day, so today is the perfect day to get started. Startwalkingnow.org reads, “employees are encouraged to wear sneakers to work and take at least 30 minutes out of their day to get up and walk. It's a great way to raise awareness of the importance of physical activity and to give your coworkers a friendly push toward a healthier life.” On WalkScore.com, they’ve ranked America’s most walkable cities. They took certain variables into consideration such as population, density, proximity to amenities and how easy it is to get around without needing a car. Washington D.C.- 73.2 8. Miami- 72.5 9. Minneapolis- 69.3 10. Oakland- 68.2 In the most walkable city, New York, Little Italy, SoHo and the Flatiron District are the most walkable neighborhoods. San Francisco’s most walkable neighborhood are Chinatown, the Financial District and Tenderloin. Boston’s Bay Village, Chinatown and Beacon Hill are the most walkable neighborhoods in the third most walkable city.
