1805 letter by Thomas Jefferson is reportedly being sold at the very low price of $35,000, reports the Associated Press. The 1805 letter for sale is being sold by the Raab Collection.
According to NY Daily, the rare 1805 letter for sale is a one-page letter. It was reportedly handwritten during Jefferson's presidency. It was also previously owned by an anonymous collector who has strayed from the eyes and never before been seen by scholars or the public.
Raab Collection is a known dealer of rare historic documents. Now they are selling the 1805 letter by Thomas Jefferson which provides a closer look into the family side of the Founding Father, reports The Christian Science Monitor.
As published on the Raab Collection's website, the 1805 letter for sale now was a letter from President Thomas Jefferson to his friend and estate manager. It was created on Jul. 24 of 1805 and confers to the fate of Jefferson's Poplar Forest plantation after his death.
The 1805 letter reportedly contains a discussion of the late 62-year-old president's wish to have his Poplar Forest plantation in Virginia appraised. This so he could start parceling off portions of the property to his grandchildren.
Addressed to the plantation's former overseer, Bowling Clark, Jefferson wrote: "The time is now approaching when I shall wish to be parceling off some of my lands here to my grandchildren."
The Raab Collection in Philadelphia has reportedly set the price at $35,000 for the 1805 letter. Nathan Raab, Raab Collection's president said the letter showcases that even while he was president, Jefferson was still concerned with his family and the legacy he would be leaving his grandchildren. They call the 1805 letter "a significant find" as there has been no information ever which suggests that Jefferson had an interest in providing for his grandchildren.
According to the Examiner, back in 2011, another letter from 1805 was auctioned off by the Nate D. Sanders Auction house in Santa Monica, California for $226,870. The 1805 letter is reportedly the latest letter by Jefferson shown by Raab. Just last week, another letter from 1809, also by Jefferson, was tweeted out. It detailed his relationship with Harvard University.
1805 letter handwritten by Thomas Jefferson and for sale at $35,000 has never actually been seen by scholars or the public. The Raab Collection website says that the company was founded by attorney, author, and collector Steven Raab three decades ago as "an outlet for his love of history". Since then, the company has "discovered and carried some of the most important historical documents, advising public and private clients worldwide." The 1805 letter is part of this love for history.
