Every one knows the drill. Exits are on the right and left. Flotation devices under the seat. If the air masks come out of the ceiling all hell is breaking lose and your life is definitley flashing before your eyes. The only thing worst than not being able to flip through your iphone while the stewardess goes through her safety routine is how boring in flight videos are. Air New Zealand recently released an island themed video with bikini clad safey instructors dubbed 'Safety in Paradise' that is the best safety video since...ever.
It features four bikini clad women dishing out the best in flight safety advice in a beautiful island setting in an almost tongue in cheek fashion and while New Zealanders apparently have a sense of humor, American's have been outraged at the sexism on display in the video.
"It seems that suddenly they are saying that my sexuality is all that matters about me," one critic, Massey University lecturer and feminist commentator Deborah Russell told the Sydney Morning Herald.
'Safety in Paradise' is nothing out of the ordinary for Air New Zealand, as previous version of their safety videos saw Betty White dishing out safety 'Old School Style' or riffage on the Lord of the Rings with 'Just Another Day in Middle Earth'
But with 'Safety in Paradise' Twitter was ablaze with tweets about sexism, and concerned parents quibbling about their daughters viewing the video, and while I'm all for women empowerment, I don't think Air New Zealand crossed any boundaries with their quirky island themed safety video. It's nothing new that airlines attract beautiful women to be stewardesses and what would you expect grown women to wear on the beach, parkas?
The last thing we need to worry about on our red eye flight to New Zealand is seeing women in swimsuits give us safety instructions in paradise.
