An Amtrak collision in eastern Virginia involved a car on the tracks, but miraculously the driver of the car survived.
The driver of a small white car ignored the warning signals about the approaching train and tried to drive around the crossing bar. It didn't go well. An Amtrak train collided with the car at around 6 a.m.. The train was traveling at a speed of about 79 miles per hour when it hit the car, Virginia State Police spokeswoman Sergeant Michelle Anaya told WTVR. There were 44 people and five crew members on the train at the time of the accident.
Anaya released a statement saying "A 2000 Ford Crown Victoria, driven by Untron Drew, attempted to drive around a crossing bar, disregarding warning lights and functional crossing bar. Mr. Drew has been med flighted to VCU, in Richmond."
The train didn't derail and the driver of the car was taken to the hospital. The driver, Untron Drew had non-life threatening injuries. Alcohol seems to have played a role in the poor decision to cross the tracks. The train did not sustain any damage and no one on the train was injured.
Northeast Regional train 174 was traveling from Norfolk, Va., to Boston when the accident occurred. The train eventually resumed service and continued on to Boston with a two hour delay.
