When looking for a place to travel to, low prices and discounts are often an important factor, but some places aren't always so cheap. A new survey by CheapHotels.org determined what are some of the most expensive destinations in the U.S. based on hotel rates.
The findings particularly apply to hotel prices from the peak summer travel period of July 1 to August 31. The rankings were determined based on the average cost of each location's cheapest available double room, so the prices reflect the minimum amount travelers to expect to stay at a certain location. The average prices were based on hotels that were rated two starts or higher, so there may be room that are cheaper but of lower quality in the locations.
The most expensive destination is Provincetown, Massachusetts at an average of $217 a night for a double room. With its high nightly price, the coastal Massachusetts city is the priciest on the list. Provincetown is followed by New Jersey's Cape May as the average price is $204 a night. The third most expensive isn't too far behind. Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts has hotel rooms for an average of $202 a night. This location also happens to be close to Provincetown in southern Cape Cod.
