Another Dreamliner Flight Diverted Due to Mechanical Problems, the Third Incident In a Six-Day Period

A United Airlines 787 Dreamliner was diverted due to mechanical problems, which was the third incident for the Dreamliner in six days, according to CNN. United Flight 94 was traveling to Denver early on Sunday when it was forced return to the Houston airport it had departed from.

The flight was grounded due to an issue with the brake indicator. The plane landed without any incidents or passenger injuries, according to Boeing, which manufactures the Dreamliner.

Last week, another United Airlines Dreamliner flight had to make an unscheduled landing. The flight was traveling from Denver to Tokyo and was diverted to Seattle because of a problem with the oil filter.

Thursday, a third United Airliner Dreamliner 787 had to be diverted to Newark's Liberty Airport in New Jersey due to a "low oil indication," according to United. That flight was traveling from London to Houston, and also was able to land safely.

This spate of incidents has come six months after the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grounded the Dreamliner aircrafts worldwide because of problems with the battery system.

"The 787 is a great airplane and we know it will continue to receive heightened attention when reliability events occur in service," Yvonne Leach, the spokeswoman for Boeing, said on Sunday.

The 787 Dreamliner aircraft began service in the U.S. in 2012. The global fleet consists of 50 aircraft, all of which were grounded in January due to a battery problem after two battery incidents of overheating occurred, causing concern from safety officials.

Boeing addressed the problem by giving the battery system a new design using new, lighter lithium-ion batteries.

In April, the FAA ordered all operators of 787 aircraft to make specific modifications to the planes. United has been operating its fleet after the improvements, flying six 787s since May.

Currently, United is the only domestic operator of the aircraft. Dreamliners have high fuel efficiency resulting from lightweight carbon-composite materials that are used in its wings and fuselage.

United has ordered 20 additional Dreamliner 787-10s, which is a longer version of the plane.

Airlines around the world have made commitments to buy Dreamliners, with hundreds of millions of dollars riding on their success.
