‘Mac Pro’ Redesign Might Take Long, Apple Admitted Lack Of Flexibility With Current Design

Apple has not yet forgotten the "Mac Pro," even if it has been almost four years already since the company last updated it. Apple is planning to redesign its desktop device, admitting to its lack of flexibility, but plans to take its time in doing so.

According to a report from BuzzFeed, Apple has been focusing on its desktop lately, thinking of ways how they can make it appealing to professionals who had been frustrated for the lack of update. The company's SVP of worldwide marketing Phil Schiller has said that a team is now working hard on it.

"We are completely rethinking the Mac Pro," Schiller said in a recent roundtable with several reporters. The problem, though, is that it will likely take a while before fans can see the new Apple "Mac Pro," with Schiller confirming that the redesigned desktop won't launch this year.

The report said that the team working on the "Mac Pro" has been allowed to take as much time as they need to come up with "a system that can deliver a wide range of performance." And chief among them is making sure the new desktop can be upgradeable.

Being able to upgrade the desktop is one of the things that Apple sacrificed in order to achieve a "strikingly clever design." But that clever design has been a problem for Apple, as it made hard for the company to upgrade the "Mac Pro."

"We designed ourselves into a bit of a corner," Craig Federighi, Apple's SVP of software engineering said. He added that their "specific vision" for the desktop had boxed them in a corner.

Apple's VP of hardware engineering John Ternus also admitted that the design doesn't have the flexibility that they needed to be able to upgrade the desktop. This is a rare admission of mistake from Apple and The Verge reported that the media roundtable was a way for the company to apologize for the mistake.

Fans of the "Mac Pro" felt ignored and underserved, especially since Apple rarely even mentions the product, let alone upgrade it. The report said that by going public with its plans, Apple can at least address fans' concerns that they are ignored and alienated.

Though it will probably still take a while before a new "Mac Pro" arrives, at least Apple showed that they cared about the desktop's users, even if they are the minority. Check out more news about Apple's media roundtable about the "Mac Pro."
