BioWare will be launching "Mass Effect: Andromeda" in just a few days, but the game is not a sequel to their "Mass Effect" trilogy. The creative director for the series, Mac Walters, said that it was actually their intention for the game not to be a sequel.
According to a report from GameRant, Walters said that the "Mass Effect" game was a trilogy from the very beginning. "We wanted the trilogy to end," he said.
The report said that BioWare even marketed the game as a trilogy, so it's likely that they would want to try to conclude the game in "Mass Effect 3." This would also reward gamers who have stuck with the game during its five-year run.
The way the trilogy ended also made it harder for BioWare to make "Mass Effect 4." The report adds that the players who also played the trilogy would feel slighted if a sequel was to be made.
Which is why BioWare decided to make "Mass Effect: Andromeda" instead of "Mass Effect 4." The new game can be played even if gamers haven't played the original trilogy.
But that doesn't mean that "Andromeda" didn't borrow some features from the original trilogy. Take for example the new multiplayer component. The latest component of the game is "extremely similar" to "Mass Effect 3's" own multiplayer mode, according to Scott Butterworth of Game Spot.
But he said there is a major positive difference in "Andromeda's" multiplayer option. For instance, players don't need to play the multiplayer mode to unlock certain stories and options to finish the single player campaign which was a frustration for a lot of gamers in "Mass Effect 3."
But "Mass Effect: Andromeda's" multiplayer option can still tie into the story campaign, according to lead designer Ian Frazier. He said that the tie between the single player and multiplayer exist in the "Strike Teams."
GameRant said that it's still up for debate on whether BioWare made a good movie with "Mass Effect: Andromeda" instead of "Mass Effect 4." But with the game set to launch on March 21 to PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One, everybody will soon find out. Check out the gameplay for BioWare's latest game in the video below.
