Warner Bros. has closed a deal with Matt Reeves to direct the highly anticipated "The Batman" movie. The director seems to be excited and honored to do the project as he claims he was a Batman fanatic since he was a child.
Matt Reeves, who helmed the box office hit "Dawn of the Planet Apes" and "War of the Planet Apes" broke the news in a press release from Warner Bros. on Wednesday. "I have loved the Batman story since I was a child," Reeves told the media. The soon to be director of the Batman flick claims he has an attachment to what he described as "the iconic and compelling character" and is honored to work with Warner Bros. "to bring an epic and emotional new take on the Caped Crusader to the big screen".
The news came after Ben Affleck, the actor who played the caped hero himself, exited the director position. The actor-director who also led and produced several phenomenal movies in the past released a statement on January 30 saying he wants to focus acting in his iconic role. Since then the search for potential directors began to move the pre-production forward.
Even before the production is in search of a director, Reeves has been the front-runner to helm the Batman solo film. Though Variety suggested that negotiations had collapsed during the deal. Despite the setback, it's obvious that quandaries that may have commenced are settled between the two parties.Warner Bros. is delighted to have Matt Reeves as the director for the upcoming movie.
"We are thrilled to have Matt Reeves taking the helm of Batman, the crown jewel of our DC slate," Toby Emmerich, the president Warner Bros. Pictures Group said in a statement. Furthermore, Emmerich believes that Reeves has emerged as one of the today's phenomenal directors and confident that he is the "perfect filmmaker to guide the Dark Knight through this next journey".
Matt Reeves is also one of the producers of the movie. This also marks the "Cloverfield" director's first comic book adaptation. Meanwhile, "Mr. Batman" himself, Ben Affleck, who also co-wrote the script, wasn't mentioned at the press conference. This has led to many wondering if Affleck is still to play as the "Dark Knight" in the next Batman movie. Nonetheless, Affleck went on social media to formally welcome the new director, though no indication if he was done playing the role.
Despite the hiccups and dilemmas that aroused, the production will push it's filming next spring. "The Batman" movie is expected to premiere on November 17 this year.
