The 89th Academy Awards is scheduled to take place this weekend. And it is on Jimmy Kimmel's hands to make sure that the A-list stars in attendance, as well as the millions of people in their homes tuning in for the live telecast, are entertained. The responsibility is enormous, to say the least, and on top of that, the 49-year-old also needs to have his guards up in case friend-enemy, Matt Damon, pulls another prank on him during the show.
Fresh from his Emmy hosting gig last September, the talk show host admitted in his new profile for Variety that he certainly gets butterflies in his stomach thinking about his upcoming responsibility. Hosting Hollywood's annual biggest night is arguably one of the most covetable jobs in the industry. But there are also such high expectations for whoever booked the high profile job year after year.
Despite the seemingly improbable task in front of him. Kimmel is trying to deal with the jitters by welcoming the challenge. "I made a decision to try to enjoy the process and be optimistic," he said. "That said, my subconscious still tells me it's going to be a disaster. This is a no-win situation. Even if it goes great, you get a lot of shit from a lot of people."
Aside from the mandatory opening monologue to get everyone relaxed, fans are also wondering if Kimmel's "frienemy" for years now, Damon, will have a cameo in the Oscars. The two's onscreen feud has prompted Damon crashing the stage at last year's Emmys. The short bit was hilarious with the "Good Will Hunting" actor rubbing it in Kimmel's face that he and his ABC program lost, yet again, to John Oliver's "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver" for "Outstanding Variety Talk Series."
"Manchester by the Sea," starring Casey Affleck and Michelle Williams is nominated for various Oscar categories. And Damon being one of the film's producer guarantees his attendance on Sunday. But when E! Online caught up with the 46-year-old actor during the premiere of his latest project, "The Great Wall," Damon has no plans of partaking in the show.
Nevertheless, the Oscar-winner did not miss the opportunity to throw shade at Kimmel saying that he does not need to make an effort to sabotage the host's event as it is already given that he will do badly in it. "[Jimmy] knows I hate him, and there's also a restraining order at the moment, so we're not allowed to directly address each other," he added.
The 89th Academy Awards will be held on Sunday, Feb. 26. The show will be broadcasted live on the ABC Television Network at 7 p.m. EST/4 p.m. PST.
