Daisy Ridley's character, Rey, will be sporting a new look in "Star Wars: The Last Jedi." The latest image from the merchandising package that's related to the movie shows Ridley holding a lightsaber and her hair no longer tied up, which could mean several things.
The image first appeared in StarWars.com, together with the announcement of "Star Wars Force Friday II." The event is a global celebration of the launching of the merchandising products of the latest movie.
The image is the packaging's new cover and it features Rey at the center wielding a lightsaber with Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) and Finn (John Boyega) in each of her sides. Alex Leadbeater of Screen Rant said that no major design changes appear on Poe and Finn, but a change in Rey's outfit can also be seen.
Leadbeater said that Rey can be seen sporting a black undergarment in the image. But aside from what was seen, no other detail can be deciphered from the image due to the cropping.
As for Rey's hair, Marissa Martinelli of Slate reports that there's some meaning to the hair that Rey will be sporting in "Star Wars: The Last Jedi." This is after Ridley posted a video of herself wearing a pillowcase on her head during a workout session.
Martinelli said that Ridley mentioned that the pillowcase was protecting his new hairstyle for the latest "Star Wars" movie. She theorizes that Rey could either be hiding a Padawan braid in that new hairstyle, to indicate that she is now training to be a Jedi. It could also be hiding that there's Padawan braid, which could mean Luke Skywalker refused to train her.
The new hairstyle Ridley will be sporting, Martinelli adds, could also be a nod to her being a Skywalker. Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) and Padme Amidala (Natalie Portman) are the characters that sport different hairstyles all throughout the Star Wars saga, so her new hairstyle could be a nod to that tradition.
Either way, fans will soon find out when "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" premieres this December. Leadbeater said that a trailer for the movie is expected to come out in April, during the Star Wars Celebration event. Check out Rey's new appearance in the video below.
