A huge blow fell upon the 'Divergent' franchise as its lead star, Shailene Woodley officially announced that she will no longer reprise her role in the final chapters of the series. The 25-year-old actress and political activist confirmed she will not return in the movie turned TV series. Apart from her, other casts of the film are expected to follow the actions of the actress however, nothing is official.
The third installment of the "Divergent" series didn't fare well in matching the hype of the mob which makes a fourth movie impossible. The series' final chapter "Ascendant" was previously slated for a theatrical release in March 2017. However, due to the poor yield of "Allegiant", the final chapter was redeveloped to become a TV series in hope of spawning a spin-off series.
Ever since hearing the news, Woodley has been doubtful about her involvement in the recent change of plans. Last Tuesday, February 7, the actress confirmed that she will not be joining the TV cast and reprise her role as Tris Prior as reported by MTV. "No, I'm not going to be on the television show," said Woodley during the premiere of HBO's "Big Little Lies".
This major casting problem, proved to be a huge blow to the franchise because the fans loved Woodley's portrayal of a character in a dystopian world. The actress even expressed her intentions of doing justice to everybody that believes in Tris and the story that Veronica Roth brought them. However, as much as she likes to play the role again she can't, saying that she didn't sign up for a TV series.
According to Vanity Fair, Woodley's co-star Miles Teller who played as Peter Hayes will also be unlikely to make the jump to the TV series. As of now other stars of the "Divergent" series including Theo James, Ansel Elgort, and Zoe Kravitz, seemed that they are unlikely to appear on the TV series. This makes the door wide open for a whole new cast for the franchise.
