The Cleveland Browns are clearing salary cap space by releasing quarterback Josh McCowan and defensive back Tramon Williams. The Browns, though, doesn't seem to be done making moves as they're also looking to upgrade their quarterback position.
According to a report from Lindsay Buckingham of Fox 8, the Browns made the announcement of the release of the two players on Tuesday. McCowan and Williams were the two oldest players on the team and are also among the top six highest-paid players.
Buckingham adds that McCowan would have been paid a $750,000 roster bonus on March 11 had the Browns kept him, while Williams would have been received a roster bonus of $1,225,000. Both McCowan and Williams are set to make $5.7 million this year.
Joe Pantorno of Bleacher Report said Joel Corey of CBSSports tweeted that the Browns are set to free up $11.3 million in its salary cap with the release of the two players and leaving $1.17 million in dead money. The team now has a total of $105 million in cap space for 2017.
Pantorno said that what's left for the Browns is to address the problem with its quarterback position. The team could use the draft for its quarterback needs, as it has the number one and number 12 pick in the draft.
The 2017 draft's top quarterback prospects are Deshaun Watson of Clemenson, Mitch Trubisky of North Carolina, and Deshone Kizer of Notre Dame. Pantorono said that one of the three could still be available at the twelfth pick.
Cleveland.com reported that the Browns currently has three quarterbacks left on the roster, Robert Griffin III, Cody Kessler, and Kevin Hogan. Kessler is likely the quarterback that the team will keep as a developmental player, but an upgrade is needed.
The report adds that multiple sources are saying the Browns are trying to pursue Jimmy Garoppolo, the backup quarterback of the New England Patriots. If they can't acquire Garoppolo, the team will likely look at the roster of the other team, as well as the free agent market.
