Working in the airline industry, flight attendants know a thing or two about how operations work at an airport. A JetBlue flight attendant used her knowledge to try to help her boyfriend steal an iPhone from another passenger, but she and her boyfriend were arrested when the plan backfired.
Stacy-Ann Smith, 27, and her boyfriend, Jason McCaulay, 23, of Queens, NY were on their way on a free flight to Puerto Rico from JFK Airport when the couple wound up getting arrested. Smith, a JetBlue flight attendant, was off duty at the time. She assisted her boyfriend in stealing an iPhone from another passengers after they placed the device in a security bin.
McCaulay snatched the iPhone 4S from the security bin of the passenger in front of him. Upon realizing that his phone was missing, the passenger alerted an Transportation Security Administration who called the Port Authority police.
Surveillance video showed that McCaulay swiped the device, however he didn't have it on him when the police approached. Smith, who said McCaulay slipped the phone into her pocket without her knowledge, was caught sneaking into the ladies room. Officer Kenneth Doran followed her into the bathroom and questioned her.
Smith denied knowing anything about the stolen iPhone, however officer Doran found the phone hidden inside a toilet-seat-cover dispenser in one of the stalls.
Smith then admitted to leaving the phone in the bathroom and McCaulay confessed about the theft.
Both were arrested. Smith received a desk-appearance ticket and was released while McCaulay was charged with petit larceny and criminal possession of stolen property. He was being held until he had an arraignment hearing in Queens Criminal Court.
This wasn't the first time a flight attendant was caught stealing an Apple device. In September, a man used the "Find My iPad" app after his iPad went missing on a flight to Los Angeles. The app showed that the tablet was inside the home of a Horizon Air flight attendant that was on his plane.
