Voters in America decided that Barack Obama is the next president of the United States and media coverage of election night was plentiful. Now, famous journalist, Diane Sawyer's coverage is the talk of the night with people asking was she drunk? Sawyer, who is an ABC News veteran, was all over Twiter last night with her slurred speech, that is uncharacteristic for the put-together anchor.
USA Today reported, "Her performance prompted many to wonder if she was overtired or had suffered a stroke, and it prompted others to crack jokes about what else might have caused the behavior."
Even celebrities took notice. USA Today reported that Josh Groban tweeted, "I'll have what Diane Sawyer is having," and Ricki Lake retweeted, "And Diane Sawyer declares tonight's winner is... chardonnay!"
The New York Times reported that "there was plenty of chatter on Twitter about Ms. Sawyer, who viewers noticed was off her game. Ms. Sawyer repeatedly slurred her words, and on at least one occasion called Mr. Elliott by the wrong name." They also added that ABC said, "Ms. Sawyer was simply exhausted."
A source at the New York Daily News said that Sawyer was not drunk she was just tired after days of little sleep and election preparations.
This afternoon, Sawyer tweeted:
In 2009, her slurred speech during ABC's Obama inauguration coverage also got attention. The Los Angeles Times reported that sources she had been up for 24 hours straight, but that that didn't keep people from speculating about her sobriety.
ABC has not made any official statements as of yet about Sawyer's performance on election night.
