Found in the northeastern part of China, the city of Harbin is dubbed as the 'Ice City' known for its Ice and Snow Festival. If you'd love to see huge castles and sculptures made in ice, then this is definitely the place for you.
The Harbin Ice and Snow festival attracts lots of tourists and visitors both locally and internationally. According to Travel China Guide, it's a time where the best ice sculptors gather together and exhibit stunning works of art. Travelers can literally witness and experience the "Ice City" Of Harbin.
It's an annual festival that lasts for about a month and according to CNN, it's actually in its 33rd year. The festival is divided into different zones each with its own theme. However, the biggest and grandest attraction is the Harbin Ice and Snow World which is literally a world made of ice that covers an area of 750,000 sqm.
It's not just a festival but it's also a contest so that's why it's not just a simple event. The ice comes from Harbin's Songhua River where local farmers would get blocks of ice from the river and supply the sculptors.
The best time to visit the place is night time because LED lights are used to illuminate the different sculptures and structures. It's really a must-see for travelers and in fact, the festival attracted millions of visitors last year as reported by BBC. This year, there was also a fireworks display which even made the event more beautiful than ever.
Aside from the Ice and Snow festival, the city of Harbin is also a place full of sights and attractions. The Harbin Forest Park, Harbin Forest Botanical Garden and Confucian Temple are also a must see.
Well, it's not too late to still experience the Ice and Snow Festival because the cold still stays for a while. But if you can't make it, there's still more places to visit in Harbin.
