"The Grand Tour" is one of Amazon Video's shows where Richard Hammond is one of its hosts. The show originally aired on November 18, 2016 and now has a total of six episodes with "Happy Finnish Christmas" as their latest episode.
The show is hosted by Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May. All three have been hosts on the BBC series "Top Gear", where they gained their fame and reputation.
Using most of what made "Top Gear" fun and interesting, the trio added their own touch for the show. However, on the show's latest episode "Happy Finnish Christmas", host Richard Hammond made an offensive joke as a reply to Jeremy Clarkson's comment.
According to BBC, Jeremy Clarkson commented on a Volvo's interior saying that "The only problem is that in one of those, you couldn't enjoy a chocolate Magnum ice cream." Richard Hammond then replied with "It's all right, I don't eat ice cream. It's something to do with being straight."
Following his reply, the audience applauded which baffled co-host Clarkson. Clarkson was confused to the reaction and asked the audience "Why are you applauding him? What do you mean? You're saying all children are homosexual?"
Jeremy Clarkson is known for his offensive language and remarks, but was even baffled at Hammond's remarks toward eating iced cream. On an article on Independent, co-host James May said that he is "not mates" with his other co-hosts, along with other remarks about his opposition on bad behaviour.
The public was offended at the joke, stating that it was homophobic and inappropriate. The Guardian reports tweeter feeds from Olly Alexander saying "Excuse me while I gag on my Cornetto."
Some even just joke about how they have been eating iced cream wrong their whole life as they are not coming out gay. One tweet showed a picture of an iced cream shop named "Big Gay Iced Cream Shop", stating that it would be Hammond's worst nightmare.
