Apple iPhone 5 Event Live: Apple's iOS 6 release date revealed, New Maps App For Travelers, Live Stream [SEE VIDEO]

The new iPhone is set to be announced on September 12 at 10:00 a.m. ET and with it the phones will see an upgrad to iOS6 software that will host more than 200 new exciting features. Old versions of the iPhone will also be able to download iOS6. One of the phones most relevant changes is the Maps app.

The new Maps application in iOS6 will replace Google Maps as the main default mapping application on both the iPhone and the iPad. The new maps app was designed by Apple from the ground up.

Google and Apple have increasingly become rivals and Apple has chosen to create the application themselves.

Included in Maps are turn-by-turn directions that work with Siri, local search with 100 million business listings from around the world, Yelp integration, a free crowd-sourced traffic service, and 3D mapping with a Google Earth-like feature called 'Flyover'.

What are the new features on Maps?

The new app will have a host of new and exciting features. The new Maps application will have real time traffic data which offers alternative routes according to traffic changes. It will also have 3d images that are taken by helicopter hired by Apple, called 'Flyover.'

Apple's Map program will also integrate with Siri so you can ask for directions on it.

The app will allow for local search of 100 million business listings from around the world. It is also Yelp integrated.

Other iOS6 Travel Features

Other iOS 6 apps include the new Passbook which will be an exciting addition to the travel industry. The Passbook application allows passengers to us it as their boarding pass for flights.

Many airlines have already said they would accept Passbook, including Delta, American and Virgin Australia.

The Passbook app will allow users to store boarding passes, coupons, movie tickets and more in one place.

Apple is announcing it's new iPhone 5 today that includes the launch of the highly anticipated iOS 6 on it's new phone.
