Traveling Lit: Travel Books To Read For Inspiration

Sometimes, all one needs to move forward is some good literature. Whether you're already planning your next adventure or simply waiting for a chance to book those tickets, here are some of the best travel books that you should read if you're seeking inspiration.

The Motorcycle Diaries by Che Guevarra

Written by Che Guevarra when he was just 23 years old, this is a memoir follows the Marxist revolutionary's travels with friend Alberto Granado as they journey to places like Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Panama, and Buenos Aires. He spends months on the road, experiencing and witnessing events that would later shape his philosophy. This one also already has a movie adaptation, but don't let it stop you from reading the actual book.

Notes From a Small Island by Bill Bryson

Here, author/comedian Bill Bryson goes around Great Britain before moving back to the United States. A poll for World Book day in 2003 revealed that this was the best book that represented Britain.

The Beach by Alex Garland

Yes, this one already has a great movie by Danny Boyle, but the book where it was based is a must-read if you're looking for exceptional storytelling. Dubbed by author Nick Hornby as "a Lord of the Flies for Generation X," this follows the story of Richard, a young backpacker searching for paradise

M Train by Patti Smith

Traverse New York City through the eyes of musician/poet/artist/author Patti Smith, who describes the book as "a roadmap to my life." This is about her life in New York City with all the pains, sorrows, and beauty that it brings. If you like her style, you can also check out Just Kids, her first novel, which is a heart-wrenching, beautiful story about falling in love, being in New York, and being an artist.

On The Road by Jack Kerouac

This is something that's almost always present in lists like this one, and with good reason-Kerouac will tell you to always be on your feet and go where your heart takes you. If you like music, poetry, and the open road, this is for you.
