The thing about DC comics is that they use fictional cities instead of actual cities as location for their epic stories. Marvel comics, a competitor in the comic industry, is more accustomed to using real life cities in their fictional world. Both cities where Superman and Batman currently resides is supposed to symbolize New York. With the release of the new trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice where Batman and Superman are about to come face to face, comic book fans are left wondering where exactly the 2 heroes are currently located.
Where Marvel used the real New York City as location for the events that unfold in their superhero world, DC uses the Metropolis to symbolize New York in Superman's world and Gotham City to represent the same city in Batman's world, this taking into consideration that Batman and Superman do not live in the same city and that these cities exist separately. Frank Miller, famous comic book writer and artist, also made mention that Metropolis was 'New York by day, and Gotham as New York by night.'
Metropolis is said to be one of the largest and popular cities in the United States with New York as its state. Gotham, on the other hand, may have represented New York in its earlier versions but recent comics imply that it is a city within the New Jersey state. DC may have been compelled to do so because Metropolis and Gotham is supposed to exist separately.
With the many Superman and Batman comic books as well as movie adaptations, the description for Metropolis and Gotham has changed considerably over time which is probably why there is much confusion to where exactly these cities are located.
Seeing that these cities are both fictional, it's recommended to look at these cities as having their own identities as opposed to what they are trying to represent in the real world.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will be released in theatres this coming March 25, 2016.
