The 87th Academy Award turned out to be much more special than expected, as the event's glitz and glamour was taken into another level by a surprising virtuoso performance from pop star Lady Gaga, who blew away everybody with her rendition of Julie Andrews' classic songs from the iconic film the Sound of Music.
Lady Gaga, who rose to fame with her chart-topping electro pop singles such as Poker Face & Born This Way along with her unconventional fashion sense, left everything she was known to man last night as she presented a different Gaga at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater.
Dressed in a pure white gown, Lady Gaga belted her way through the Sound of Music classic melodies (Edelweiss, The Hills Are Alive, Favorite Things and Climb Every Mountain) in such an amazing display of powerful vocal range and musical brilliance. Her performance drew a standing ovation from the crowd, but the warm hug she received from a crying Andrews served as a stamp of approval to her tribute.
"Dear Lady Gaga," Andrews to Gaga moments after the singer's showcase via CBS News. "Thank you for that wonderful tribute. It really warmed my heart. It's hard to believe that 50 years have gone by since that joyous film was released."
"As for me -- how lucky can a girl get?" Andrews added.
Lady Gaga won not just the hearts of Andrews but millions of fans watching around the world. And perhaps, just perhaps, she also made some of his critics, who called her a one-dimensional singer, jumping on her bandwagon now.
Of course, Lady Gaga was not the only winner of the night, as 24 Oscars were handed to the winners, four of which going to Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance). Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's film took home the Best Picture Award, Best Directing, Best Original Screen Play and Best Cinematography, while the most commercially successful entry, the American Sniper, grabbed its only Oscar for Best Sound Editing.
Meanwhile, veteran actress Julianne Moore finally won her first Oscar, thanks to her outstanding performance in the movie Still Alice. Eddie Redmayne nabbed the Best Actor Award for his role as the English physicist Sir Stephen Hawkins in the Theory of Everything.
