Spotify News: Ed Sheeran, Katy Perry as Most-Streamed Artist of 2014

The "Lego House" has become an empire as Ed Sheeran claims the top rank in Spotify's "most streamed artist" list. His queen, of course, is no other than Katy Perry.

Fans of Ed Sheeran and Katy Perry can't get enough of their voices as they bring them to the top of the Spotify's "most streamed artist" list for 2014, according to Idolator.

Singer-songwriter Sheeran was dubbed the most streamed male artist of this year as the 23-year-old artist received more than 860 million listens on Spotify. Eminem came second on the list.

Sheeran's recent album, "x," also gained millions of sale in the United Kingdom this week. The album has been played 430 million times despite being dubbed as "authentically uninspiring," by Independent. The album also received a "generally positive" review with a 67% score on Metacritic.

On the other hand, Perry became most streamed female artist of 2014. The "Dark Horse" singer snatched the spot from Rihanna, who has been in the position for the past two years. Ariana Grande followed Perry while Lana Del Rey came third.

Spotify also announced Pharrell William's "Happy" as the most streamed song of the year worldwide, according to Yahoo news. The song was streamed more than 260 million times.

Meanwhile, Coldplay was able to secure the title for most played band on Spotify.

Iggy Azalea's "Fancy" was dubbed the most streamed song of 2014 in the United States, according to Yahoo News. Her album, "The New Classic," came second behind Sheeran's "x" as the most streamed album in the United States.

Spotify also announced the top emerging artists of 2014, which included alt-J, Royal Blood, Tove Lo, Future Islands, and Jungle.

Only 14 artists have been able to rack up more than 1 billion streams on Spotify.

Spotify claimed that more than 50 million users listened to seven billion hours of music in the whole of 2014. To remark its users' support, the music service company is awarding its U.S. listeners with a premium, three-month membership for only 99 cents this month.
