Los Angeles Lakers head coach Byron Scott informed everybody that he is close to making a revamp on its starting lineup, with the possibility that Jeremy Lin might now assume a new role as the playmaker for the team's second unit.
In spite of their 129-122 overtime victory against the Toronto Raptors on Sunday, Scott stressed the he's looking to tweak his lineup in order to find the perfect combinations of players that will help them win more games this season.
According to Lakers Nation writer Coney Hansford, one possible move Scott could make is swapping the roles of Lin and Ronnie Price. While Lin has been putting up solid numbers (12 points and 5 assists per game) as the Lakers starting point guard, the Lakers bench just struggled to score points.
Aside from Nick Young, the Lakers don't have a legit offensive weapon on the bench, and that certainly killed their chances in winning those close decisions in their first 15 games.
Hansford believes Lin will produce even better statistical line with a more up-tempo second unit. Moreover, the Asian American star will have all the freedom to create scoring opportunities for himself and his teammates with Bryant taking some breather.
"A Ronnie Price-Jeremy Lin swap could also be considered as Lin's offense could help the bench unit, and maybe Scott will look to get the rookie Jordan Clarkson some more minutes."
Lin, who was supposed to be the team's backup point guard before Steve Nash hurt his back in training camp, has shown flashes of brilliance in his first month with the purple-and-gold. But aside from his success with his role, he has also endured the pain that comes with in sharing the same backcourt with the league's leading scorer in Bryant.
Other option for Scott could be inserting the team's best defensive player into the starting lineup to give them more rim protection, while Boozer coming off the bench.
"The most obvious one and the one fans have been calling for is to insert Ed Davis into the starting lineup in place of Carlos Boozer. Davis is the team's best defender and has earned himself the chance to play more minutes, provided he can stay out of foul trouble," according to Hansford.
