Imminent threat is coming as scientists recently discovered that West Antarctic ice sheet is slowly melting as a probable effect by the global warming.
Scientists released their recent study on Monday about the threatening phenomena. Two scientific papers have been released by the journals Science and Geophysical Research Letters presenting the same terrifying conclusions via different means. Groups of scientist have found out that West Antarctic glaciers have retreated far enough causing instability on the ice sheet while factors of global warming is also being considered.
The melting of the ice sheet is greatly feared by most scientists since there is a huge possibility that water levels will rise. According to them, the melting occurs because the warm water that naturally occurs below the ocean is being pulled into the surface by an intensification of the powerful winds. Although the cause of the stronger winds is uncertain, many researchers believe that global warming is a huge factor.
Continuous thinning of the West Antarctica ice sheet brings a big mark of terror as it becomes unstoppable. If it continues to happen, there is a huge possibility that sea levels may rise for about ten feet or more. With that, worldwide crisis could occur.
The rising may be slow in the rest of the 21st century; however, there is always the possibility that it can significantly increase in the future. The phenomenon is always associated with the global warming that is mostly due to the human activities. The greenhouse gases emitted are likely to cause instability on the West Antarctica ice sheets.
Global warming has constantly brought natural disasters in many different countries. The idea of increasing sea level poses risk to the countries that are struggling in terms of its economic stability since it is expected to cause the global crisis. The unstoppable melting seems to be another apocalyptic thought that brings fear to the entire humanity.
