Will Smith, Texas Tech linebacker, was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the seventh round of the NFL Draft Saturday, Lubbock Online has learned.
The Dallas Cowboys drafted a linebacker, - in the person of Texas Tech's Will Smith - the second time in four picks.
"This is unreal," Will Smith said following the Cowboys' decision. "[The Cowboys] were my favorite childhood team, to get drafted by them, it's a blessing."
After coming from Riverside City College in California, Smith has reportedly played for two years for the Red Raiders.
During the NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys decided to take the 6-foot-2 Texas Tech weakside linebacker as their 23rd pick in the seventh round, which is the 238th overall.
"I thought I was going to go a little earlier," Smith said. "But I'm just happy to get a call any way. It didn't really matter at that point."
The 231-pound player reportedly began all 13 games during his senior season, finishing with 120 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks.
Texas Tech's Will Smith had a career-high 18 tackles during a 41-16 loss to the Longhorns.
According to BleacherReport, "An injury bug sweeping through the linebacker position has become something of a recent trend down on Valley Ranch. By taking Smith in addition to Hitchens, the hope from Dallas' prospective is to have some insurance in case injuries strike again in 2014."
Within the last two NFL seasons, Bruce Carter and Sean Lee have reportedly missed a total of 21 games due to injury.
