NY Daily News reports that eight acrobats dropped 25 to 40 feet, even landing on a dancer below during the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus stage accident in Providence, R.I. at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. The incident reportedly occurred when a metal-frame contraption malfunctioned Sunday morning during the performance. Because of the unfortunate event, eleven patients were admitted to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. One patient is reportedly in critical condition as of the current moment.
The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus stage accident was supposed to be a hair-hanging stunt. Unfortunately, it became a horrifying nightmare when the stage suddenly collapsed and seriously injured eight acrobats and a dancer. Eight performers reportedly took a 25-to-40-foot dive and landed on the dancer during the show. According to Daily Mail, others have made it out of the incident with less serious injuries.
Spokesman Stephen Payne for Feld Entertainment, the parent company of Ringling Bros. said that it was the 11 am show when the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus stage accident happened. According to him, the stunt involved eight performers hanging "like a human chandelier" by their hair, unfortunately, the hair trick didn't work out when the metal-frame contraption where performers used to hang off separated from the metal truss it was connected to. What happened next was chaos.
CNN reports that according to a hospital spokeswoman, eleven patients were admitted to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence with varying degrees of injuries. This included one in critical condition because of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus stage accident. Officials said that despite one in critical condition, there are nobody had life-threatening injuries.
General Manager Roman Garcia of the Legends show said that the victims of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus stage accident were now good condition. He said, "Everybody's doing fine, everybody's at the hospital, everybody's conscious, everybody's doing pretty well."
39-year-old Sean Morrison of North Kingston, R.I. was amongst the audience. He was with his 6-year-old son when the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus stage accident occurred. The 6-year-old told the Daily News, "I was shocked. They canceled the show and that was it. The hook came off and they came down."
The sound of ambulance sirens quickly filled the air after the accident occurred. The disappointed 6-year-old added, "I wanted to know what would happen at the end. I can still hear the ambulances going."
Meanwhile, other people from the audience thought the incident was part of the act. Rosa Viveiros from Seekonk, Mass. was with her husband and their 6-year-old grandson and 9-year-old niece. She told the Daily News of her experience, "It was pretty overwhelming to see that." Her husband Joe also said, "We thought it was part of the circus."
Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus stage accident resulted in two shows getting cancelled and scheduled later on Sunday.
