Served Hot and Fresh: Macaulay Culkin and The Pizza Underground

"Home Alone" star Macaulay Culkin newest venture is music: pizza music. Culkin is part of the ensemble, The Pizza Underground, a comedy rock band that performs covers of The Velvet Underground's songs. Some of their transformed songs include "Stephanie Says" ("Papa John's Says), "Cheese Days" ("These Days"), "Have a Bite of Crust" ("Satellite of Love"), "All the Pizza Parties" ("All Tomorrow's Parties") and "Take a Bite of the Wild Slice" ("Walk on the Wild Side").

Along with Culkin who does the kazoo, percussions and vocals are members Matt Colbourn (guitar, vocals), Phoebe Kreutz (glockenspiel, vocals), Deenah Vollmer (pizza box, vocals), and Austin Kilham (tambourine, vocals).

Glockenspiel player and vocalist Phoebe Kreutz spoke with Vulture and explained how the band began in February of 2012. "I was on tour with my husband, Matt Colbourn, and Deenah Vollmer. This began as something that we were playing around with on tour just to pass the time on trains. Then when we got back to New York, we played a show with our friend Austin Kilham, who joined the band. Deenah's boyfriend, Toby Goodshank, is in an art collective with Mack called 3MB, named after Three Men and a Baby. They had a big show at Le Poisson Rouge last year, which I guess was the first time I was in a room with Mack. Anyway, Deenah was telling him about the band, and he said, "That sounds great. I want in if you need an extra member." "

On November 11, 2013, the band decided to recorded a demo at Culkin's house. They performed at a Lou Reed tribute in the east Village that same month. The group released its first music video in January 2014, parodying various Velvet Underground songs. An 18-show North American tour entitled Fresh to Your Door took place in January to March of 2014. In January 2014, the cassette of the demo was released by Bitter Melody Records on yellow, white, and red cassettes.
