Photos show a massive army of crocodiles attacking a herd of hippopotamuses. The photos were taken by Marc Mol in 2011 during a trip over Zambia's South Luangwa National Park.
The reptiles were resting on the side of a river when the group of hippos approached. The crocodiles were in no mood to share the area and so they descended from the river and attacked the group of mammals. The hippos moved upstream quickly to avoid the crocodiles. One photo shows a group of crocodiles enclosing and feasting upon a dead hippopotamus. The hippo lay dead on the sludge a at the crocs' mercy while his comrades escaped the snapping jaws of the reptiles.
The standoff was captured by Mr. Mol, a wildlife photographer, while on a microflight early in the morning. In his travel journal, Mol wrote: "We have approximately 140+ crocs feasting on a dead hippo as the relentless hot & dry season lingers on."
Mol described his flight over the fierce fight as a "thrilling experience" that he would "never forget".
"The hot weather was relentless but it was likely this hippo died from anthrax which lies dormant for many years but can get stirred up if the dry season is an extended one," he said.
"What I did find that was most interesting was that the crocodiles appeared to be the only animals that were concerned with the microlight flying overhead." "It could well be a throwback to the days when Pterodactyls ruled the skies."
