#dayofsilence tag goes viral in different social networking sites as the annual activity is done to protest against the harassment and bullying of people from the LGBT community.
April 11, 2014 celebrates another year of protest against the discrimination being experienced by lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender individuals. As a support arises for the said annual activity, #dayofsilence goes trending in various social networking sites such as in Twitter and Facebook. Many tweets are noted with the said tag in favor of the said movement.
The Day of Silence celebrated in support to the LGBT community focuses on battling with the discrimination, harassment and bullying experienced by the members of the said community. The 19th Annual Day of Silence is being led by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network's or the GLSEN. The action of protest ironically involves the student's vow of silence which takes the entire day.
Vow of silence made by the supporters of the #dayofsilence activity symbolically represents the silencing of LGBT students and other supporters. The movement is used to raise awareness regarding on the effect of bullying to its victims. The harassment experienced by the LGBT community has significantly brought fear for these people to confidently speak about their real sexuality.
The #dayofsilence continues to be an annual celebration and action which was first created by a student named Maria Pulzetti. Its first event was organized in 1996 by the students of University of Virginia. The 2008 Day of Silence has been dedicated to the memory of Lawrence King who was shot by his classmate. King was actually a gay student E.O. Green Junior High School and his murder was considered by the Newsweek as the most prominent gay-bias crime.
Kids at school are being harassed and bullied mainly due to their sexual orientation and gender expression. The support given to the #dayofsilence increases every year which is participated by students coming from nearly 8,000 schools.
